What makes Instagram such a steal for Facebook

Originally posted on Gigaom:

When Facebook decided that it would spend a billion dollars (though in reality it turned out to be $715 million) to buy Instagram, a San Francisco-based photo-sharing network, it was a decision that was met with raised eyebrows, some tears and a lot of anger. There was this feeling that Facebook bought the one true challenger to its core value proposition — photos and photo sharing.

RaviLaurynI was reminded of that feeling this morning when I ended up having coffee with Ravi Vora and Lauryn Meyers, twenty-something creatives from Los Angeles. These two travel around the country, combining their work and love of photography and sharing it with thousands via Instagram. I am one of those thousands who have been spell-bound by the ethereal beauty of their Instagrams.

Vora told me that he grew up in Michigan wanting to be a geneticist but when he scratched his creative…

By all odds, the chances of me writing this are pretty slim. Five years ago, around this time, I had walked into the emergency room of the UCSF Hospital in San Francisco, complaining of a bad heartburn. In reality, it was a heart attack. The numbers were against me. I was one of the almost a-million Americans who suffer some kind of heart attack every year.

Prayers, divine intervention, great medicine or all of those resulted in me walking out of the hospital a few days later, and a month later I was back in the saddle again. I got really lucky that I got a second chance – a chance to not only remake my body, but myself and my life. I got a chance to make some wrongs right.

What If Mark Zuckerberg Stepped Down as CEO From Facebook?

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg

What will happen if Mark Zuckerberg steps down as the CEO of Facebook? Will the company collapse or it can improve under the leadership of a capable and an ‘experienced’ CEO? Well I think there are more positive aspects of his stepping down as CEO. There are historical incidents related to this, which are in support of my ideology.  Stepping down as CEO by the founders has mostly helped the companies. Examples are the well known Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Alarmingly and disastrous slide in the stock prices have resulted into the half the price of IPO when it all started. Facebook’s major investor Peter Theil sold off nearly all the stock worth $400 million. Is this the end of cool guys’ making headlines? Will he ever make cover page news again? Well, yes of course! But only if he steps aside as CEO for now and give the control of the company in a safer and an experienced hands.

At some point of time one should concede that he is not capable of doing things as things have become large and vast. Zuckerberg is only 28 and has no prior experience. Handing over the CEO post to a more authentic and able person wont be about ignoring the responsibility but will be a future securing step. Tech giants as I mentioned earlier, like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have gone this way, ceded control and it turned positive.

The Apple Incident

Isn’t it surprising that how can a man get fired from the company he founded himself? Well it was not over. He returns to the company he founded after a gap of 12 long years. And that return was so triumphant that still that return is considered to be the key incident in making company ‘the most valued company’ of all time. What happened here? When Jobs was not experienced enough to handle the fastest growing company he had to quit. Later when he returns triumphantly it brought all the laurels and all the optimism to the company. Being dethroned from the same company Steve Jobs founded was no shame. He started from the beginning. He founded NeXT which turned to be the next turning point for the Mac OS and other software of Apple Inc.

The Google Incident

Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google. When the business turned huge he headhunted the perfect CEO in his 20’s while enjoying the executive power himself. Eric Schmidt served as a CEO of Google from 2001 to 2011 and Page-Brin continued to learn from him, and actually retained the control of the company with themselves. In 2011 Page was ready to take the helm as CEO. Not to forget that in regime of Schmidt Google saw its transformation form a mere search engine to a powerful global tech house.

The Microsoft Incident

Bill gates was also among the few who step aside from the CEO voluntarily. Gates became the Chief software architect while his old friend Steve Ballmer was made CEO. And now the record of Ballmer is also astonishing as I believe all is depended on the release of much anticipated Windows 8.

So, these are the examples of some CEOs exit which at some stage turned to be positive for the company. But lastly it is not my company and it will not work according to my notions. I believe there are more intelligent people sitting out there at Facebook headquarter. My best wishes to the Facebook’s billionaire for his cool company. I often remember the dialogue from the movie ‘The Social Network’ goes “Money, or the ability to make money, doesn’t impress anyone around here.”So true.

Remotely Control Your Android Phone Using SMS

Consider a situation when you kept your phone in silent and now you cant find anywAndoridhere. You wanted to ring on that but the ringer is in silence mode. Now what? Frustration of course! Why don’t you use the app called “Agastya” which will turn your ringer on and you can find it with a simple missed call from your mate’s number. You will turn your phone’s ringer by just sending a SMS from any phone. Even the simplest Nokia 1100 will do.

The app “Agastya” can do many other tasks other than turning your ringer on via SMS. You can also retrieve your missed call alerts, and also incoming SMS messages through simple SMS.

So how do you do it?

Firstly, you need to install this app from Goggle’s play store. Click here to install Agastya.

Now it will ask for your email id and a PIN which you will use to retrieve information from your Android Phone. Enter both the information and you are done. (Don’t forget to keep Agastya running in the background.)

Now from any mobile sms that PIN (which you entered at first startup time). And within few seconds you will receive a list of commands which will help you retrieve the information from your phone. These will be valid for the next one hour.

Once you receive that SMS containing the list of commands you are ready to hack into your own phone. Do take care of the capital letters while sending those codes.

This is pretty useful for the users which have multiple phones. In case you forgot your other phone somewhere you can also fetch contacts from your phone via SMS.

The IMEI number can help you block a stolen phone from accessing network. (To know the IMEI number of your device type *#06#.)

Here is a list of SMS command which you can try at your android phone.

SILENT Turns of the Ringer of the phone
RINGER Turns on the Ringer
IMEI Gets the IMEI number of your phone
LAST MESSAGES Retrieve the last 5 messages received at your phone
LAST CALLS Retrieve the last 5 dialed/ received/missed call detail
<CONTACTS> Fetches the contact number of that person

There are other alternatives to this app too. You can also try Where’s My Droid app which will not only turn on the ringer of your phone remotely but will also send you the phone’s current GPS location by SMS.

Increase your chances to get a confirmed train ticket from IRCTC

I believe almost every one of us have faced problems while booking online tickets from IRCTC. And especially when it comes of booking the Tatkal tickets. Time plays the most crucial part in the booking. The more it takes time in filling in the details, the less are chances of getting a confirmed tatkal ticket. And we need to fill in that details every time the transaction gets cancelled or we need to book an another train ticket. You must be thinking isn’t there any way by which we can reduce the time which we waste every time in filing in the same details like name, age and sex and ID number? Of, course there is. You just have to click on a bookmark and all the details of the passenger are automatically inserted into the IRCTC booking details page. You may save as many number of passengers you want to. Here is how. The video explains how to reduce the time spent in booking hence increased chances of getting a tatkal ticket from IRCTC.

Now here is a trick to make sure you are all ready with your filling details even before the bookings are started. What you will need for this is Magic Autofill. It’s a simple online tool which will fill the passenger details on the IRCTC website with the click of a button thus giving making you ahead of others.

magicc

Now how to do. Click on “ctrlq.org/IRCTC” around ten minutes before the time when Tatkal booking is going to be open complete the form on the website – its almost a copy of the form available on the Indian railways website. Once you’ve filled the passenger details, click on I’m Feeling Lucky and the tool will generate a Magic Autofill button. You need to drag this button to your bookmarks toolbar.

Now when you are ready to book a ticket on the Indian Railways website , just click the same Magic Autofill button on your bookmarks toolbar and magic will happen as your form will be automatically filled up with the passengers details!

This happens because you are filling a form in advance and saving it as a bookmark. When you are on the actual form, and you click the bookmark, you  transfer the previously filled values to your new form.

There are some forms in IRCTC form which may not have every field that’s available on the Magic Autofill website like food preference or ID details, in that case, you can just ignore these fields on the Magic Autofill site. Try it yourself for any train you feel like or you are about to board very soon.

You’ll also have to provide an ID number on the online reservation form of all passengers when booking for Tatkal tickets.

Apple’s $1,049,343,540 victory over samsung

Apple Samsung Ruling

Last year, Apple claimed in a lawsuit that Samsung violated some of the designs and technology that made up the iPhone and iPad. These include features like rounded corners of the user interface, much talked about pinch zoom, and a rubber band feature. On the contrary Samsung denied this and countersued and accused Apple of infringing on some of its patents.

However the jury has found five of the six patent filed by Apple which have been violated by the Samsung.

Now that Apple has won its patent claims against Samsung, the company has to pay Apple $1.05 Billion as a monetary damage.

There were more than 700 questions regarded alleged infringement by both the companies.

How Google is also blown by this verdict

The verdict comes as a major blow to the entire Android community. Samsung is one of the strongest Android player and Google has been quietly providing its own quiet support to Samsung. The most important part of this verdict is that now Apple has a special morale to sue all other Android devices maker which will affect Google directly.

Android is not free anymore

Many of the Android users are already paying a license fee to Microsoft, now will also have to pay an additional fee to Apple. Hence Google’s free Android operating system will not be free anymore.

Company’s statement after the ruling

Apple said

“The lawsuit between Apple and Samsung were about much more than patents or money. They were about values.”

While the Samsung statement came as

“Todays verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple but as a loss for the American consumers. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices”

Well, I personally believe its not all over yet. But at present Tim Cook must be rejoicing with the ruling in favor of his company.

A list of Finest utilities to make your system run faster

You recently bought a brand new computer and don’t know how to choose between the software as which one to keep and which one to uninstall.  Do not worry. This post explains everything. From making email accounts to linking desktop over the network, we have tried to explain everything. We also mention some of the finest utilities that will make your system run even smoother.

A very interesting piece of article I found over the net. The article basically is a letter written by a son to his mother who is using internet and computers for the first time. A guide which is essential for  not only first time internet using mom but for every one who wants to gain some plus knowledge about the software and internet. The letter has suggestions regarding the really useful tools and web apps available for different occasions.

Dear Mom,

I hope you are enjoying the new notebook. Now the first thing I want you to do is install PC Decrapifier – this will detect and remove all the unwanted trial programs that came pre-installed with your machine.

Next you should install Firefox – it’s an Internet Explorer like web browser but slightly better. Instead of using browser bookmarks, try the delicious add-on to save the addresses of all your favorite websites. Another add-on that you should install is Iterasi – web pages come and go but Iterasi will permanently archive your favorite web pages (like that eggless cake recipe).

You should create two email accounts one Gmail.com – share the primary email address with your friends and family but for everything else (like the newsletter and shopping deal alerts) always use the secondary email address. If you come across a site that requires registration, generate a temporary email address from 10MinuteMail.com and enter without sharing your main email.

With so many websites around, you’ll soon find it very hard to remember all those passwords so get into the habit of putting down all the different passwords into KeepPass from day one.

If you plan to carry this laptop in public places (like the Library), get this Laptop Alarm software that will emit a loud sound if someone tries to shut down your computer or remove the power cable. Laptop thefts are not so uncommon after all.

The trial version of Microsoft Office on your computer will expire after 60 days so you may completely uninstall that software and switch over to Google Docs – it has all the basic feature you would need in an Office suite including templates for tracking expenses and utility bills. You can use your primary Gmail address to log into Google Docs.

Sometimes your friends will send you documents, images or video clips that won’t open on your computer – that’s because you don’t have the right viewer software on your machine. You can simply go to zamzar.com and convert the file into some simple format (like avi for video, jpg for images, doc for documents, mp3 for songs, etc.) that you computer can play/open.

If the computer contains too many programs that you’ll rarely or never use, get the Revo Uninstaller to get rid of such programs permanently. To free up additional space on the hard drive, use WinDirStat to learn about file folders that are occupying the maximum space on your computer and delete the unnecessary files.

Be very careful when deleting files on your computer but if you ever delete something important accidently, Recuva may help you recover all those erased files. It even works with the memory card of your digital camera.

To download pictures from your digital camera onto the computer, get Windows Live Photo Gallery. This software can also upload your photos to our common family Flickr account so everyone gets to see your pictures even though we are several hundred miles away from you.

If the computer is not able to play your huge collection of DVD movies, you’re probably missing some codecs (don’t worry about the term) –  just download the VLC player and the DVDs will play just fine.

You should also get Live Mesh – it will allow us to share files and documents with each other privately plus you can use Mesh to backup important files onto the cloud (I mean the web).

I am almost always available for chat on Google Talk but if some of your online friends use other chat software (like Yahoo! Messenger or AOL), you can easily connect with them through Miranda or, if you don’t want to install any software, use Meebo.

Another thing – do open an account at PayPal and link it to your main credit card as this will make online shopping easier. If you ever have a problem with PayPal or something isn’t clear, just call their toll-free 1-800 support number from your browser using Gizmo.

If your current voice plan is too expensive, I suggest that you download Skype – it lets you make calls from the computer to any landline or mobile phone at much cheaper rates. We can also use Skype to have video chats on weekends but if you don’t find me online, just send me a video email with Eyejot.

If you have newspaper clippings, bill receipts and business cards lying in the closet, just take a picture of them separately using the camera of your mobile phone and transfer them to the computer with Evernote – it will turn your “paper” documents into digital format that is always so easy to find and manage.

When planning a movie or weekend dinner with friends, you can send all of them a quick reminder for the event via phone and SMS for free using Notifu. If you’re inviting people at home for a party, head-over to sites like VideoJug.com, SuTree or 5min.com for new ideas about food, cocktails, party games, etc.

If you ever need to fax a document somewhere, just go to FaxZero, upload the document and fax it for free. FaxZero is only available for fax numbers of US or Canada but for international numbers, you may try eFax.

You can also consider dropping those magazine subscriptions that are delivered by snail mail – switch to Zinio instead that delivers the same magazine but in digital format.

As far as I remember, you’re currently using an unlimited data plan for the Internet but if that’s not true, get BitMeter – it will help you visually monitor your bandwidth usage so you never exceed the plan limit. You may also want to download FlashGet for downloading big files from the Internet.

If you notice carefully, some websites add an orange colored icon in the browser address bar (go to cnn.com to see a live example) – this icon means that you can get updates about new articles posted on that site automatically without having to visit the site again and again. If that’s the case, go to Feed My Inbox and type the address of that website – you’ll be notified automatically via email.

When browsing the web, you’ll frequently come across photographs, web pages and videos that you’ll want to share with us (your family members) – you could either send the link in a group mail or better still, simply create an account at Tumblr and start saving all the “interesting” stuff there.

And if you ever find yourself spending too much time on the computer, get RescueTime to know about websites where you spend most of your time.

There are a few other things that I want to do on your computer like installing a hosts file and configuring OpenDNS so that sites load quickly on your machine. These however require some geeky knowledge so I will try configuring them from here itself via CrossLoop– a remote desktop access tool.
